TVIS has implemented a project for updating digital topographic maps of scale 1:50,000 territory of Ukraine. Ambitious Project “Cards to promote proper land management” are part of international technical assistance from the Government of the Kingdom of Norway.
Within 11 months, our team of 50 cartographers updated 244 nomenclature sheets with a total area of 81 776 km², which is almost equal to the territory of such a country like Austria!
The purpose of the project customers put the creation of a base of geodata “Basic State Topographic Map” for the National Infrastructure of Geospatial Data (NAD) and preparation for the publication of digital topographical cards.
The work was taken by the Commission as part of four organizations: SE “UkrDAGP”, the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces, the State Enterprise “NDIGK”, and Kartverket (Norway). As the source data was used by the existing digital scales of 1:50,000 in the format of the ArcGIS database, an arthophoto aerial photography scale 1. : 10 000, PLANET LABS orthophotoplanes, raster models of copographic maps of magnitude 1:50 000.
During the work, the team met with difficulties that slowed the progress of work. In particular, the problem of differences in the position of contours with neighboring organizations – the erection took a lot of time, especially in large settlements. It was necessary to collect almost everything: roads and streets, quarters, houses and garages, limits of settlements, railways, lines, and more. Never forget the process of matching quarries in Krivoy Rog with relief, water resources and engineering structures.
In addition, a large amount of time and resources spent on the territory of large industrial cities of Ukraine, through a dense building and complex relief (especially in Kyiv and Krivoy Rog). And to the remnant, the update of the plant in PLANET images caused a lot of issues in performers, “due to” relatively weak quality indicators of the original image.
A significant factor that influenced the progress of the work was a Covid-19 pandemic, which significantly reduced the possibility of communication both in the middle of the group of specialists and direct customers. However, this did not prevent us to resort to a new work format (in remote mode) and fulfill the obligation in full. Unexpectedly the easiest of the tasks was the formation of a managerial team and groups of direct performers-cartographic. Tween company expresses personal thanks to the leader of Ms. Elena Popov. Professional and organizational qualities of Olena in the shortest possible time allowed to establish a stable work of the collective, which contrary to a number of significant obstacles on time and qualitatively completed all works. Despite all the difficulties, work in the team was interesting and extremely useful, a powerful projector enriched the experience of our specialists and developed a number of unique professional skills. Our company will gladly continue cooperation with UkrDAGP, SE “NDIGK”, TS of the Armed Forces and Kartverket within the framework of future projects.
