TVIS has implemented a project to update digital topographic maps at a scale of 1:50 000 in Ukraine.
The ambitious Land Management Maps project is part of international technical assistance from the Government of the Kingdom of Norway. In 11 months, our team of 50 cartographers has updated 244 nomenclature sheets with a total area of 81,776 км
2, which is almost equal to the territory of a country like Austria! The aim of the project was to create a geodatabase "Basic State Topographic Map" for the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure (NIS) and to prepare for the publication of digital topographic maps.

The result of the work was accepted by a commission consisting of four organizations - SE "UkrDAGP", Topographic Service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, SE "NDIGK", and Kartverket (Norway). As the initial data, we used the existing digital topographic maps at a scale of 1: 50,000 in the format of the ArcGIS database, orthophotomaps of aerial photography at a scale of 1: 10,000, Planet Labs orthophotomaps, and raster models of production prints of topographic maps at a scale of 1: 50,000. During the work, the team encountered difficulties that slowed down the progress of work. In particular, the problem of differences in the position of the contours with neighboring organizations (took a long time in the construction, especially in large settlements). We had to connect almost everything: roads and streets, neighborhoods, houses and garages, boundaries of settlements, railways, power lines and more. We will never forget the process of reconciling quarries in Kryvyi Rih with the relief, water resources and engineering structures.

In addition, a large amount of time and resources were spent on the territory of large industrial cities of Ukraine, due to the density of buildings and complex terrain (especially the cities of Kyiv and Kryvyi Rih). And finally, the update of the vegetation cover on the pictures of Planet caused a lot of questions from the performers due to the relatively poor quality of the original image. A significant factor influencing the progress of work was the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly reduced the ability to communicate both within the group of specialists and with direct customers. However, this did not prevent us from resorting to the new working format (remotely) and fulfilling our obligations in full.

Unexpectedly, the easiest task was to form a management team and groups of direct performers-cartographers. TVIS expresses its personal gratitude to the project manager Ms. Olena Popova. Olena's professional and organizational qualities in the shortest possible time allowed to establish a stable work of the team, which, despite a number of significant obstacles, completed all the work on time and with quality. Despite all the difficulties, working in a team was interesting and extremely useful, a powerful project enriched the experience of our specialists and developed a number of unique professional skills. Our company will be happy to continue cooperation with UkrDAGP, SE "NDIGK", Topographic Service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Kartverket in the framework of future projects.
